Available from 28. March 2008

HIARCS is famous for its human-like playing style and its ability to come up with the unexpected. Recent HIARCS versions are renowned for sharp attacking chess and a never say die attitude to their play. In HIARCS 12 this playing style has been positively enhanced through a new deeper search and evaluation of dynamic possibilities. It is capable of building deep attacking positions against the enemy king and executing exciting mating attacks. This new approach enables HIARCS to play interesting, distinctive aggressive chess while being sensitive to the needs of the position.

This has improved HIARCS in all phases of the game and even in quieter positions HIARCS 12 is able to be more selective about the variations it explores to achieve a better understanding than previous versions leading to much stronger play.

As an analysis partner HIARCS is second to none with its ability to learn from the positions it analyses and plays. This is an essential feature for all chess players interested in analysing games, studies, positions and particularly the opening as it guides HIARCS into a greater understanding of chess positions and their possibilities than ever before. For many years top chess players have used HIARCS as an important analysis partner for this very reason. This combination of strength, playing style and learning makes HIARCS 12 ideal for all players looking for an intelligent chess partner that learns and improves with you.

A new super strong Deep HIARCS 12 openings book is also included which has been dramatically enhanced with the latest cutting edge chess theory and a wealth of novelties to provide a huge repertoire of finely tuned variations. For HIARCS fans and engine collectors the Championship winning HIARCS Paderborn 2007 engine is also included.

Chess Genius

 http://www.chessgenius.com/

Richard Lang's ChessGenius programs have a long history of being the strongest in the world. They have won Computer Chess World Championships 10 times.

Perhaps ChessGenius's greatest achievement came in August 1994 when it shocked the Chess World and became the first program ever to beat a World Champion (Gary Kasparov) at a non-blitz time level. ChessGenius also knocked GM Nikolic out of the same tournament, achieving an astounding 2795 ELO rating  - all on a mere 100 Mhz Pentium PC!

Jeroen Noomen after the 9th WCCC in Paderborn (June 1999)

A NEW CHALLENGE

Since the world championships in Paderborn ended I can tell you that I am very positive about the cooperation between Rebel and Chess Tiger. The reputation of Rebel is well known, but I also met with Christophe Theron and in my opinion he is a very talented programmer. I am sure that Chess Tiger has a high potential, the more because this program is already having a very high playing strength.

For me this means that - besides my work for Ed and the Rebel opening book - I have found a new challenge: Help Christophe and Chess Tiger to become a very strong chess program. In Paderborn Chess Tiger was playing with my opening book and in the future I will also work on optimizing the book for the Tiger. Somehow I feel very confident about the future, because with Rebel and Chess Tiger I am able to work for two great chess programs.

For Chess Tiger I want to share my chess knowledge to improve the playing strength of this chess program, and I am also happy that my future improved books will be a part of the Tiger. With these joint forces I am sure that we will be able to improve a lot. First goal is to participate in the open Dutch championships, later this year. Of course I cannot wait this event coming closer and closer! This will be the first test after the WC in Paderborn.

All in all I think this cooperation (between Christophe, Ed and me) can lead to newer, better and stronger engines. Of course we'll have to wait what the future brings us, but as far as I am concerned, it is going to be a bright one!

With its Chess Media System Fritz brings the world’s greatest chess players into your living room, in full high resolution video and sound and a synchronised graphic chessboard. The King

The Chessmaster chess engine is called The King, written by Johan de Koning of the Netherlands. According to the April 2007 Swedish Chess Computer Association (SSDF) rating list, Chessmaster 9000 has an estimated Elo rating of 2715 on an Athlon-1200 PC. If multiple versions of other engines are stripped out of their list, Chessmaster 9000 ranks as the eleventh best. As of March 2007, the 10th Edition has not been rated by SSDF. Another rating list, CCRL, places Chessmaster 10th Edition in 14th place on its September 2007 list.[1]

The King engine allows users to create new playing styles, also called "personalities", by manipulating several dozen different settings, such as King Safety, Pawn Weakness, Randomness, Mobility and others. Individual piece values can also be adjusted. Chessmaster 9000, for example, features over 150 different personalities ranging from International Grandmaster strength down to Stanley, who is described as a monkey and plays what are essentially random moves.

The personality feature has inspired many amateur computer chess enthusiasts to attempt to find more optimum personalities. Notable among these are Kurt Utzinger, Wilhelm Hudetz, Jason Kent, Dom Leste, Milorad Madjar, Graham Banks and Ray Banks. In Chessmaster 10th Edition, the creation of new personalities has been made easier than before.

Chessmaster 9000
Chessmaster 9000

Chessmaster 9000 defeated then U.S. Chess Champion International Grandmaster Larry Christiansen in a four-game match held in September 2002.[citation needed] Chessmaster won the match 2.5-1.5. The Chessmaster program was operated by John Merlino, the Project Manager of Chessmaster at the time of the match. Four different personalities were used in the match, the first three of which were based on famous human Grandmasters: Alexander Alekhine, Bobby Fischer, and Mikhail Botvinnik. The final game of the match used the default "Chessmaster" personality. Christiansen won the first game, lost the second and third games, and the fourth game resulted in a draw.

Smarthink

SmarThink 1.00 About engine: history, main ideas and game play

The work on SmarThink was started in 2001. It wasn't first chess programming experience of Sergei Markoff. His first chess program (Markoff's chess) was started in 1999 when he was 18 years old. In 2004 SmarThink became Russian computer chess champion and in 2005 it became CIS champion in computer chess. SmarThink is successor of the Russian computer chess traditions of “Kaissa” and “Mirage”. A lot of ideas of those engines was adopted and improved in SmarThink. IM Nickolai Olenin from Orel, Sergey Oksyuzov from St.-Petersburg and a lot of other Russian chess professionals and enthusiasts are helped Sergei to improve his engine. The main ideology of the SmarThink is to use more intelligence in both search and evaluation parts. There is a lot of chess-specific knowledge needed to fulfill a proper search. As we all know, Von Neuman computer architecture is totally different from that of human brain, and to my mind this is exactly the reason why the bionic approach (see Botvinnik) would fail. But to see a chess problem as a “conventional” search problem leads us to another dead end. SmarThink project is a try to better use computer’s strong sides in solving chess problems.

SmarThink uses many very special methods, for example searching through  attacking trajectories for the pieces and also using piece trajectories evaluation in endgame, deeper search of singular replies, “fine pruning” and so on. SmarThink search tree is very variable in it’s depth depends of the several chess-specific heuristic rules, so depths like 10/60 are perfectly normal. Such synthesis of the intellectual methods provides SmarThink with excellent tactic and strategy abilities.

Zappa: The 2005 Computer Chess Champion

Zappa Retirement

After some spectacular failures in the past months, the Zappa project is 100% finished. This includes both tournaments and future releases. Only one copy of the Zappa source code exists in the observable universe today, and that is safely squirreled away in a safe deposit box in the barbarous, provincial depths of rural Iowa, so I couldn't work on it even if I wanted to.
